A few years ago...quite a few years ago, now that I think about it, I served as the youth leader at the church we attended. In some way we were introduced to Corinthian Baptist Church in Des Moines, Iowa, and were invited up to a church service during Black History Month...which is February, every year. The congregation was predominately black. We were the minority.
We were so excited to go and experience not only a different denomination, but a cultural difference, too. We.were.blown.away! The music...the music was tremendous. Joyful. We had not heard anything like it. We had not ever seen anything like it. They clapped. They swayed. They raised their hands in worship. It was amazing.
I've often thought of that church and how they really, really worshiped and did not have any inhibitions in doing so. They were happy, proud, beautifully in the moment.
Last week, my husband and I visited a new church after many years of not going to church at all. We've missed it. We've missed being part of a church family. We've been participating in a weekly LIFE group at the home of friends. We were introduced to their church through these weekly group sessions.
So, we went. I felt at home immediately! Greeted in the parking lot with special parking for visitors, greeted at the door, introduced to different areas of the church and handed the bulletin...all while hearing worship music wafting through the doors. I was eager to go in.
A pretty simple layout; contemporary in design without all the typical emblems and markings of a traditional church. On the stage was something I was not expecting to see. Guess what it was? A mostly black choir. I don't know what I was expecting or if I had even given it any thought. I was so happy! I was so elated. The music moved me; I felt like I was back at Corinthian Baptist Church where there was an energy and excitement and wholehearted longing to be there and worship and praise His name.
Now, this is what is so interesting to me. A difference between the black culture and the white culture that I am accustomed to. What I know. One not better than the other...but, an observance. Something I've noticed. Something I wondered about then, many, many years ago and was reminded of it this past Sunday. Black people move and express themselves without abandon. White people seem to hold back. Why is that? I have to tell you...I was swaying right along with the best of them. Back and forth, swaying to the music. The white people that I saw, stood there, hands clenching the seat back in front of them; no movement. No joyous abandon. Why is that?
The music moved me...I swayed...the music moved me!
I love my life...it's taken me years to get here...but I'm pretty content and find that I'm drawn to an inspired life of creativity, learning, living and loving. My life's story weaves itself in and out of happiness, contentment, struggles, laughter, hardships, sadness, losses, gains, friends and family. What I know now, is that my life's story has made me who I am and I have been inspired by it and hope to be an inspiration to others...My Inpsired Life

We're moving again...but just next door, on THE CORNER
Our new digs are coming together nicely.
We'll be opening the doors to our "new" location...right next door, exactly on the SE Corner of The Square-Indianola, Iowa.
It's gardening time and you're gonna find some fun things to add to your garden, the garden shed, or a garden themed patio, deck or room.
We're gonna be adding to our gift lines, too. Coffee, dips, spreads and drink mixes.
Hope you have a great day!

A little ol' fashion charm
The hubs and I had business in Osceola, Iowa, yesterday, and in between appointments, we had a bit of time to spare. We did a little exploring. After brunch at The Family Table, we headed out.
To start, a trip to Osceola is never complete without stopping at Farm & Home. I walk up and down the aisles discovering so many 'new to me' gadgets and possible project material or supplies.
This mild weather has me thinking it's so much further along in the calendar. It was no different, as I anticipated hearing, first, then smelling, then seeing the sweet chicks and ducks they have in the spring. Upon opening the door, I remembered...spring is still weeks away.
After our visit to F&H, we ventured up to the square and into Robinson's Hardware. Once again, I found my self sweeping the rows of goods, just looking for the one or two things that would grab my attention. I pick up and put down, making a mental note to myself for future projects. I do the same thing at the Indianola hardware store, McCoy True Value. Up and down, around and around...somewhat mesmerized by all the tools, paint colors, plumbing supplies, etc. It goes without saying...I LOVE doing this!
Robinson's offers a bit of 'a step back in time' for me. Varying floors, multiple rooms, and so many things I didn't even know they made anymore and have not seen for years. If you can't find it at Robinson's, I don't know where you'd find it.
I could have easily made a few more stops, but the call came that my computer was ready to go...and so was the hubs. So, off we went...a few treasures came home with me, to be put to good use around the house and at Burlap & Roses. They seemed practical and a great way to help me get organized. Time will tell...but, I have good intentions and am Inspired to 'get 'er done'.

It really is important...today, tomorrow, always
Valentine's Day...a sentimental, romantic day for so many, and for others, not so much. An "I could care less" or, "it's not important" attitude, deters some from purchasing a card, a bouquet of flowers, a box of chocolates.
I want to share with you a different thought. I find it so joyful to pull out a box of mementos from days gone by. Saved cards, a pretty, but empty box of chocolates, a dried flower saved from a bouquet~maybe the ribbon. In each one lies a memory. Some distant, others of a different place and time. Not all are from my spouse. Some are from my grandmother (who never missed a birthday), my kids with their chubby fisted signatures, my mom or sister. They all hold a special meaning and memory for me.
I can only imagine, as time goes by, a spouse or loved one is gone, the chubby fist is now long and lean, that these things will only hold more value. When in the quiet hour of the day, a sleepless night of missing someone, comes along. I'll find myself, with my box in my lap, reading each one, holding it to my chest, shedding a tear or two and remembering a special time, a special love, a special place.
It is then, that I'll discover just how much love there was, how a simple gift...even just a card~picked out just for me has increased in value over time, and...and, it really was important!

Valentines Day memories...
As I have been spending some time looking through vintage Valentines that I've collected for resale and collage projects, I'm reminded of the Valentine Days of my and my children's childhood.
Remember the boxes we all had to make in school. We spent time decorating ours to our hearts content. Just waiting for the day when we exchanged cards with our classmates. I still look at a box in the store and remember "when".
If you were like me, you'd go through each card, picking out the right one for each classmate. Maybe a super special 'person' would get a super special Valentine...but, you didn't want to be too obvious, that you thought this super special 'person' was super special to you.
We were never allowed to leave anyone out. But, me being me, I wouldn't have done that anyway. And, you sure didn't want to be one 'left out' either. Even our teacher got a Valentine from each one of us.
As I look through the vintage cards, I'm enthralled with the beauty of each one. Some are cute...but, the ones that I favor are the romantic ones with sweet sentiments or simply ask: "Will you be mine?". Or, "Happy Valentines Day".
What are your favorite memories of Valentine's Day? Mine are the ones from childhood...a young and innocent time. And especially from my children's youth. Watching them decorate their box, bring it home after the party and go through each card. And, of course, now...as an adult, when you know that Valentine's Day is more than a card with a sweet sentiment. It's what your Valentine does all year long, that makes life Valentine's Day year 'round.

After two months of the new gig...I'm liking it
Burlap & Roses, formerly known as Vintage Home & Garden, in New Virginia, Iowa has opened it's doors with permanent WEEKLY hours. In business since 2002, Burlap & Roses was an occasional sale with periodic monthly sale events. With the opening this spring, several changes have occured...making it more shopper friendly. So far...it's been a huge success and I anticipate it growing even more. I'm so happy with my change and am so grateful to those who have stopped by to chat, purchase something or visit with their friends over coffee and a goodie. It's just what I pictured it'd be like.
I put my 16 year career in real estate on hiatus, wanting to pursue my desire for a more creative and inspiring venture. I put my real estate license in referral on
Housed in one of the oldest buildings in New Virginia, the building was originally a meat locker with various professionals located in the front at different times. The upper level, which is now a loft-like apartment, was home to the telephone operator. "I've enjoyed hearing the many stories from those 60'ish and older who remember coming with their parent...mostly their mom, to pay the phone bill. The story goes that the operator "always listened in" to the phone conversations. A story that could be told in most areas, I'm sure."
Offering a combination of vintage and vintage inspired "new" merchandise, there is something for most every taste. Following the trends of industrial and farm chic, recycled and repurposed vintage items, such as jewelry, hair accessories, etc. Shabby Chic, prims and more. The creativity of individuals is quite something and fun to be around. I have a few artists/junkers who consign with me. With my time being freed up from other obligations, I am able to do my own creating, which is something I can't get enough of. Whether it's repainting furniture, updating a seat cushion, floral design or upcycling vintage insulators...I'm all about it, never tiring from the process.
With the other changes, Coffee Shop 508 has been added as a full service, but simple, coffee shop offering weekly menus of lite, but delicious entrees, hot and cold beverages and sweet treats...brownie sundaes, cakes or pies, muffins, yogurt parfaits, etc. All homemade with fresh ingredients when available...the coffee shop has been a great hit~and allot of fun for me. "More fun than I was expecting"
Hours are: Thursday thru Saturday 9-3, Thursday evenings 5-8 and Sunday, noon to 3. Groups are requested to make reservations for the coffee shop. I will open by appointment for bus tours, red hatters and other groups...and for the individual. Http://shopkeeper508.blogspot.com, 515-238-7720 or myfrontporch4500@yahoo.com
